چکیده

The present experiments have been undertaken to measure the permeability of the human erythrocyte to sodium and potassium; to determine the temperature coefficient of these two permeabilities; and to investigate the relationship between external concentration of sodium and potassium and their relative permeabilities. In addition, thermodynamic constants of these two processes have been measured where possible. I t is in all cases desirable to make experimental observations when the cell is in a steady state, so t ha t the system remains as independent as possible of the disturbance caused by the observation. The radioactive isotopes of sodium and potassium, Na ~4 and K s, are admirably adapted for studies of this nature, as has been previously pointed out by Raker, Taylor, Weller, and Hastings (1) and Sheppard, Martin, and Beyl (2-4) in their studies on the permeability of the human erythrocyte to these elements.

Human Erythrocyte Superoxide Dismutase Encapsulated in Positively Charged Liposomes

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an important antioxidant that protects many types of cells from the free radical damage. One of the possible ways for the use of SOD is its incorporation in liposomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cationic phospholipids on the entrapment of human erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn SOD) in liposomes. Also, in the present study, w...

Relations between sodium transport and sodium concentration in human erythrocytes in health and disease.

1. We have examined the inter-relationships between erythrocyte sodium content and sodium transport in a group of healthy subjects and in groups of patients with disorders known to change the sodium content of erythrocytes. 2. In the healthy subjects the sodium content of erythrocytes was inversely related to both the permeability of the erythrocyte membrane to sodium (as measured by the unidir...

Taking Charge: Feeding Malaria via Anion Channels

The human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum increases red blood cell membrane permeability during infection to allow for import of nutrients and other solutes. Nguitragool et al. (2011) have now identified parasite-encoded CLAG3 proteins as key components of the import channel located on the erythrocyte membrane.
